Uber Haus: Quality. Integrity. Experience.

We Don’t Just Renovate. We Resurrect Architecture.

La Grange has more than a thousand buildings in its historic district, most of them built between the arrival of the railroad in the 1870s and 1930.

You can spot the different eras from the sidewalk. Tall houses with turrets and wraparound porches are Queen Annes. Low brick homes with a bay window out front are bungalows. The boxy two-and-a-halfs under a hipped roof are foursquares.

Inside, a lot of them have the same DNA: plaster over lath, old-growth lumber, solid framing and floor plans designed for a very different way of living.

La Grange Park came along later, and many of those houses were built differently. Charles Joern built throughout the village beginning in the 1930s using concrete, cinder brick and steel construction inspired by commercial buildings of the period. People still call them Joern homes.

If you own one, you know how solid it is. Renovating one starts with understanding how it was put together.

That is the kind of work we do.

Über Haus is a design-build renovation firm with the design and building team working together from the beginning. Designer, architect and lead carpenters are involved before construction starts, so what gets designed is grounded in how the house is actually built.

We have spent twenty-five years working on older homes.

The goal is not to erase what is there. It is to make the house work for the way you live now.

Open the kitchen. Bring daylight deeper into the house. Give everyone somewhere to gather. Add the bathroom the house always needed.

Keep the character.

Make the house better.

Frequently asked questions

What does Über Haus do?

Über Haus is a design-build renovation firm in La Grange, Illinois. We design and build kitchens, bathrooms, basements, porches and whole-home renovations in La Grange, La Grange Park, Western Springs, Brookfield, Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, Riverside and the surrounding western suburbs of Chicago. Uber Haus and Über Haus are the same firm.

What towns does Über Haus work in?

La Grange, La Grange Park, Western Springs, Brookfield, Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, Riverside, Countryside, Indian Head Park, Burr Ridge, Westchester and Oak Brook. Most of our work is within a few miles of La Grange, and most of it is on houses built before 1960.

What kind of houses do you work on?

Mostly homes built between the 1870s and the 1950s. In La Grange that means Queen Annes, bungalows and foursquares in and around the historic district. In La Grange Park it means Joern homes and the postwar houses around them.

What is the design-build process?

Design-build means one firm handles both the design and the construction. Our interior designer, architect and lead carpenters are all in house, so the drawings and the work come from the same team and there is one point of accountability instead of two.

How long does a remodeling project take?

That depends on the scope, and the honest answer before drawings exist is that nobody knows. The schedule gets built alongside the design, so you have a real one before any work starts.
